This is referred to as the "Acute Chest Syndrome" and if you practiced in the US you would be seeing this on a daily basis. The ACS is presence of fever, cough, dyspnea, and a new consolidation on CXR in the setting of SC disease. It is a common cause of death in this population. Etiologies include bone marrow PE, pneumonia, PE, and infarct. ED treatment consists of fluids, analgesia (high dose opioids) , oxygen, and antibiotics.
